Applications

These are some examples of applications obtained from Deimos-1 imagery

ico_not_home.gif Monitoring and evolution of natural deposits

Through DEIMOS-1 images it is possible to study the evolution of natural deposits. In the picture you can see the Bolivian altiplano region in which there is a flat surface with little vegetation, pierced by prehistoric ancient volcanoes.

The lower half of the image shows partially the Coipasa Salt Lake, in Oruro Department.  This is located in the West-central area of the Andres mesa, at 3,657 m above sea level.  Uyuni salt lake is located a few kilometers away from Coipasa.  Combined, they are the largest salt-covered extension in the world.  This is considered to be the largest lithium deposit in the world, although it is difficult to exploit it due to the absence of water.  Nowadays, the salt lakes are an important touristic destination; salt is still being mined and used with traditional methods.

Salt deposits in Bolivia

ico_not_home.gif The effects of deforestation as seen by satellite DEIMOS-1.

The following example shows how Deimos-1 images can be used effectively to detect changes produced in nature, such as man-made deforestation or natural evolution of forests.

This image shows Chiquitanía Region in Santa Cruz de la Sierra Department, Bolivia.  Deforestation of this territory is very fast, and prospects are bleak that it will stop growing due to economical and political interests about valuable woods.

In the image it is easy to see the results of deforestation, which is done star-shape in this region with explotation organised from the centre over approximately a 3km radius.  The Foundation FCBC ("Fundación para la Conservación del Bosque Seco Chiquitano") is promoting projects to conserve and recover this type of forests, which is of great ecological interest.  Dry Chiquitano Forest is an ecological region that is located in the transition between the wet Amazon climate and the arid Chaco region.

Clicking in the following link you can see the image over Google Earth to see it in context and appreciate the rapid evolution of this phenomenon. Download KMZ.
