Messr. Pedro Duque and Alfonso Barreiro presented their Earth Observation project on vineyard operations to the Regulatory Council of Valdepeñas wine. This project, led by the Spanish company Deimos Imaging in collaboration with the University of Valladolid, will be a reality next year, thus it will become first company of Europe that counts with an own satellite of observation that will exploit it commercially.

Mr. Pedro Duque said that irrigation or fertiliser applications can be observed for each plot and also whether plagues or other diseases are present in the wines. Thus estimations can be made of which areas can harvest begin according to optimum conditions. He also stated that “other countries that compete with Spain in wine production like United States, Australia or France already have been using the remote sensing for a long time.
