Oroville Dam at risk of catastrophic failure

DEIMOS-1 captured Oroville Dam after a threat of catastrophic failure led to the evacuation of almost 200,000 people on Sunday, February 12.

The Oroville Dam, the tallest one in the US, is located about 65 miles (105 km)  north of Sacramento, California. Unexpected erosion of the emergency spillway prompted fears among state officials that it was at risk of imminent collapse. Emergency workers raced to repair the damaged spillway, while thousands of people living downstream from the dam were evacuated.

The imminent threat has receded and the evacuation order has been lifted due to lower lake levels, but warning remains, as situation could rapidly change.
