DEIMOS-1 Image of the week (acquired 11/5/2015): Lake Tuz
The saline lake of Tuz situated in a depression in the dry central plateau of Turkey, 105 km northeast of Konya, is pictured in this image. In 2000, UNESCO declared lake Tuz Special Environmental Protection Area (SEPA). Lake Tuz is amongst the most saline lakes in the world, and the second largest in Turkey. The lake protected area includes the richest halophytic steppe vegetation in Europe. The main Turkish breeding colony of greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is present on a group of islands in the southern part of the lake (visible at image´s bottom).
