This false color imagery shows the municipality of Linhares, in the State of Espiritu Santo, Brazil. The Espiritu Santo State is formed by 27 lakes, the largest is lake Juparaná visible in the image’s center. The Doce river, crossing the image’s bottom, has a great economic importance for the region. The basin is home to the largest steel making complex in Latin America. Recently, the breaking of a dam in the Samarco mine, spilled a toxic sludge which contaminated 650 km of the river, destroying its banks and killing fishes on its way. The contamination of the Doce River was the worst mining environmental disaster in Brazil.
