DEIMOS-1 Image of the week (acquired 7/4/2015): Mahajamba Bay, Madagascar
This image features Mahajamba bay, located along the northwestern coastline of the island of Madagascar, separetad by the Mozambique Channel from the southeastern coast of Africa. Mahajamba Bay is fed by several rivers including the rivers Mahajamba and Sofia. The bay is shallow and is generally less than 5 m deep at low tide, containing sediments eroded from its basin upstream. The mix of fresh and salty water conditions host unique plant and animal species adapted to live in such environments. In particular, mangroves are a common plant species found in and around the bay. The Estuary also host abundant fish and shellfish species which support local and migratory bird species.
