DEIMOS-1 Image of the week (acquired 8/03/2015): Wadden Sea, Netherlands
This satellite image shows The West Frisian Islands and the shallow Wadden Sea in the north of the Netherlands. The Wadden Sea was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009 and is one of the largest wetlands in the world. The image represents the southern part of the Wadden Sea with part of the Dutch mainland on the right and the island of Texel at the bottom left. In the lower center of the image is visible the causeway Afsluitdijk which divides the Wadden Sea and the Zuiderzee. The caseway´s construction turned the Zuiderzee, which was a salty water inlet of the North Sea, into a fresh water lake.
