DEIMOS-1 Image of the week (acquired 9/5/2015): Majorca Island
This image shows Majorca, located in the Mediterranean Sea, the largest island in the Balearic Islands archipelago, Spain. The island is an extremely popular holiday destination from May to October. Outside the beach holiday season, the island is beautiful in early spring when the almond blossom is out. From late January and throughout February, the almond trees – about four million of them – are in flower in the valleys and across the plains of Majorca. In the upper part of the image from left to right is visible the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range which is the island´s backbone. The mountain range runs for around 90 km from southwest to northeast, with a maximum width of 15 km. From 2011 Serra de Tramuntana is UNESCO World Heritage Site.
