Project Description

DEIMOS-1 Image of the Week (acquired on 7/03/2016): The Bissagos Islands

This false colour image features the Bissagos Islands, an archipelago of over 80 islands and islets, located off the Guinea Bissau coast. From 1996, the archipelago is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, being home of a diversity of mammals, reptiles, birds and fish including protected species. The big tree shaped island in the image’s bottom is the Orango island. Centre of a national park is one of the places with the greatest biodiversity in the country. The vegetation appear in varying shades of red, due to the false-colour band combination. This indicates how sensitive the multispectral instrument on Deimos-1 is to differences in chlorophyll content, providing key information on vegetation health.
