Project Description

DEIMOS-2 Image of the week (acquired 25/10/2015): FAST

In this image is featured the Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) located in a natural basin in Pingtang County, Guizhou Province, southwest China. FAST is currently under construction and will be completed in 2016. It will be the world’s largest and most sensitive radio telescope. Construction on the FAST project began in 2011 and it is placed in a natural indentation in Guizhou province’s spectacular karst mountains. The remoteness of the location (meaning minimal interference from other radio signals) and the region’s topography make it an ideal site for this kind of telescope. When operational, it will surpass the current largest radio telescope, the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, which has a diameter of 305 meters.
