DEIMOS-2 Image of the Week (acquired 9/4/2015): Schiphol airport, Amsterdam
This image shows airplanes in the Schiphol airport, the main international airport of the Netherlands. The airport is located about 9 km southwest of Amsterdam. Schiphol is the fifth busiest airport in Europe and is built as one large terminal divided into three large departure halls. The word “schiphol” means sheltered harbour and is situated on the Haarlemmermeer polder. Originally the area was a vast swampy lake between the cities of Haarlem, Leiden and Amsterdam. In the 19th century the place was reclaimed to protect the surrounding cities from flooding.
